A common misconception is that you must have poor hygiene or cleaning habits if you end up with bed bugs in your home. We have been in some of the cleanest homes in the upstate that have fallen prey to bed bugs. We often ask our customers who have them if they had been on a trip recently, and more often than not, they have been! Bed bugs are often known as “hitch hikers” and can jump onto your luggage or clothing when traveling and follow you home.
In this blog, we will give you an idea of what to look for in order to avoid bed bugs, and some tips of things you can do to be proactive while traveling.
Before you can prevent bringing bed bugs home, you first need to be able to identify what a bed bug looks like.
Here are its main traits:
1. Oval and flat body
2. Squat head
3. Reddish-brown shell color
4. The size of an apple seed
5. Wingless
6. Has six legs
7. Two antennae
Steps you can take while traveling-
1. Check hotel reviews before booking. Websites like Tripadvisor.com will let you “key word search” the reviews to see if anyone said anything about bugs or insects.
2. Keep luggage off the floor (some people suggest setting your luggage in the tile bathroom while you inspect the room before setting luggage down).
3. Check under the tufts of the mattresses for little red spots or bugs.
4. Check the corners of the rooms for bug casings.
If you do happen to get home and notice signs of bed bugs, PestGuard will come to your rescue. Please give us a call if you are in the upstate of SC and we will be able to get your home back to the safe haven it is meant to be!
